The Lesson of Love

Chapter 6

Having the Mind of Christ

“Have ye stood by the sad and weary,
To smooth the pillow of death,
To comfort the sorrow-stricken,
And strengthen the feeble faith?
And have ye felt, when the glory
Has streamed through the open door
And flitted across the shadows,
That there I had been before?

“Have ye wept with the broken-hearted
In their agony of woe?
Ye might hear Me whispering beside you,
‘Tis the pathway I often go!’
My brethren, my friends, my disciples,
Can you dare to follow Me?
Then, wherever the Master dwelleth
There shall the servant be.”

The ideal Christian life is one in which the mind that was in Christ Jesus rules. But what is the mind that was in Christ? Is there any word that describes it? What was the very heart of Christ’s mission? What one day was there in all His life when He showed forth most clearly the central glory of His character? Was there any one act in all the multitude of His wonderful works in which the radiant blessedness of His life was revealed in greater fullness than in any other?
